About Justin Hawkins

Justin Hawkins is a freelance illustrator and a visual arts teacher at the Grace Church School in Manhattan. A native of San Clemente, California, he has called Brooklyn, New York home since 1991 and has a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, NYC.

He cites the work of German Expressionism as his major influence in style and content, which he first discovered during an extended stay in Germany during the 80’s. His primary medium is printmaking with linoleum and woodblock, as well as drawing, painting, and photography.

Justin’s work has been featured in socially conscience publications including, City Limits, the New Jersey Reporter, and Brooklyn Bridge. He has illustrated brochures for the Rainforest Alliance and his prints were highlighted in Longboard Magazine and in the book Simple Printmaking published by Lark Books. Currently, he is working on an ongoing series of prints and drawings that explore the world of surfing, focusing on the dynamic relationship between the human figure and the sea.
